Choosing My Path: Why I opted for a PhD over a DNP

Updated: Mar 26, 2024

In the world of advanced nursing education, two primary paths that lead to a doctorate are a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Each path is critically important and offers unique opportunities. The career aspirations of holistically helping others in a greater context are similar, yet differ from the approach.

After over a decade of deliberation, I met with a trusted colleague to discuss my options. She allowed me to just talk while 'taking notes'. She said that I lit up each time I talked about my journey through quality improvement activities. She asked what I lost time doing. I said that I could be up all night not realizing until morning that I was locked in on writing or crunching numbers. I shared that I felt that my emotional capacity for the bedside was not going to last another 20 years. I've seen and carried through so many families and kids on the worst days of their lives.

As we concluded our conversation, she handed me the paper. It was a map of my thoughts and passions in nursing. I put it in a 'safe space' in my office and forgot about it. I remember most my decision to pursue a PhD. I think broadly and love sharing new knowledge.

The DNP route would have been tremendously 'easier' due to my years of experience. However, the PhD route filled significant knowledge gaps such as research methods and capturing my thoughts and ideas to put to paper. I am thankful for the time with her and truly believe I made the best choice for me.
